Description
My third entry for Abbie Shores' "Edit This 76" contest:
At night I often found myself wandering, sax in hand, to the old abandoned lighthouse down by the shore. I’d climb the spiral staircase to the top—to the empty lantern where light hadn’t shone for many years-- and there, in the darkness, I’d play a melancholy tune. I imagined those somber notes emanating from my horn like tendrils of smoke spreading out over the sea, searching for her, for the love I’d lost long ago…
Then, one night while playing, something extraordinary happened--something that defied a rational explanation. The music found her—no, not the love I’d lost long ago--A new love…From the depths of the sea she surfaced, a creature with the face of a goddess, luminous as the full moon on a clear night and more immense than a humpback whale.
The sight of her startled me so much that I stopped playing, but then as she towered over the lighthouse, our eyes met and something in me knew she meant no harm. It occurred to me that my music had brought her forth—something in my playing must have touched her soul. Perhaps she too had lost a love long ago. I sensed she wanted me to continue and so I indulged her…
Every night thereafter I brought the music and she brought the magic and it was just the sort of magic I needed—the sort that lit up my world and made it shine brighter than it ever had before…
